Welcome to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Week or OMD Week for short! OMD is my all-time favorite band from the 80s. I absolutely love all aspects of their songwriting and artistry. They mix acoustic and electric instruments brilliantly. They mix uplifting and melancholic themes perfectly. They embody everything about the decade so well, from fashion to musicality to culture, OMD really captured what it was like to live in the 80s.
While their megahit "If You Leave" is definitely my favorite from them (you can see my cover of that song here), they have so many other great hits as well as amazing B-Sides, and I will try to cover some of my favorites this week.
Day 5 of OMD Week features "La Femme Accident," which was a single off their album, Crush. They have a handful of songs that are just plain beautiful. No nonsense, no excess, no fluff. Just stripped down to the basics and very raw, open, and emotional.
This song, in particular, is very moving. There is a subtle, relaxed tone to it as if basking on the deck of a sailboat but at twilight. There's no real cause for alarm but you know that the deep is just below. It's quite graceful yet unsettling at the same time, a great juxtaposition for the listener.
Whenever I write songs, I try to apply this sort of method or theme to them. Make them sound beautiful and accepting or attractive but with a sort of cognitive dissonance just below the surface. They just do it so much better LOL! I hope you like my performances on this one. Please tune in tomorrow for Day 6!
