Welcome to Third Eye Blind February! All month I will be releasing drum covers and karaoke performances of one of my favorite bands of all time!
This is Part 6 of an 8-part series—in other words, two videos per week—dedicated to IMO one of the most underrated bands of the 90s and 2000s.
When I first heard "Losing A Whole Year" on 106.7FM KROQ in Los Angeles, I fell in love. Then, they released "Semi-Charmed Life" and it instantly became my favorite song. Since then, they have released seven (7) albums, four of which I absolutely love. Though they are really only known for their first album and a couple of songs off the second, all four that I adore contain some amazing material in them.
If you get a chance to listen to my original music, you will notice that they have a huge influence on my songwriting.
The song that catapulted them into stardom, "Semi-Charmed Life" charmed basically everyone living in the late 90s, including me. Yes, it's cheesy sounding, almost Motown-like in its Jackson 5-esque R&B style with alt-rock guitars using only 3 chords and indie-sounding drums that have a hint of swing but definitely no Motown funk. There's some artistic validation with the seriousness of the lyrics, though, as well as the dreamy breakdown in the second half of the bridge. Yes, I have studied this song LOL! In fact, if I had to guess, I estimate I've listened to this song at least 250 times, quite probably a lot more than that. So to say I know it is an understatement. Yet, I'm still not tired of it. I think that qualifies it as an all-time favorite. What do you think? Are you tired of this song? I hope not! Let me know in the comments!
