On January 18, 2018, I posted a drum cover of Toto's I'll Be Over You as part of a series of Toto covers I did for my good buddy, urhottto45, a fellow YouTube drummer in Sapporo, Japan.
Original Cover posted in 2018:
Back then, all my content was pretty raw but improved from my first videos the previous year. I feel like each year when I look back, my content improves a lot. From the actual drumming to the sound recording, video recording, and editing, everything seems to get better as I continue to work on my skills.
I'm not real high on redoing covers despite the fact that whenever I revisit a cover of mine, usually I hate it, especially the more time that has passed since first posting it. I will admit that I have tried to redo covers in the past, mainly because I watch the first version and feel like I can play it better. I know the sound and picture will be better...but usually, that's not good enough of a reason for me to redo one. But when I genuinely feel I can perform the drum parts better, I try to redo it. Yet each time I've tried the performance is moderately better at best. Usually, it's not better at all. So to date, I don't believe I've actually redone a cover that was on my KMKanDrum channel.
I've redone a couple that I posted originally to my personal channel for obvious reasons. Most recently, the Janet Jackson song, Alright, which I made into a Guess The Drum Cover?! episode and contest:
So, I present to you, my first cover redo, and just so it is actually different from the original cover, I made sure to use a drumless version of the song and I did a karaoke performance as well. Now, I know I am not even close to the performance level of the original musicians, Jeff Porcaro on drums, Steve Lukather on lead vocals (as well as guitar, of course), and Michael McDonald on background vocals, but as most of you know already, it's not about trying to be as good as the pros. It's about playing along to your favorite songs and paying homage to your favorite artists.
Please enjoy my drumming and singing on this Toto classic:
