Welcome to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Week or OMD Week for short! OMD is my all-time favorite band from the 80s. I absolutely love all aspects of their songwriting and artistry. They mix acoustic and electric instruments brilliantly. They mix uplifting and melancholic themes perfectly. They embody everything about the decade so well, from fashion to musicality to culture, OMD really captured what it was like to live in the 80s.
While their megahit "If You Leave" is definitely my favorite from them (you can see my cover of that song here), they have so many other great hits as well as amazing B-Sides, and I will try to cover some of my favorites this week.
Day 3 of OMD Week features a single off a Best Of compilation. Yes, that's right! "Dreaming" was OMD's last single and it actually did pretty well on American charts. They wrote the song as a single to promote their 1988 release of "The Best of OMD" and included it in the album. So in other words, a brand new song was on their Best Of album and turned into one of their best songs. Kinda strange and meta and foreshadowing and prophetic all at once!
This one is definitely one of my favorite OMD songs but it's a little higher in register so my voice struggles to hit some of the higher notes in the song. Still, it is so fun to sing, so I couldn't pass up the karaoke opportunity. I hope I didn't butcher it too much.
The drums are so fun to play with those 16th-note hi-hats with the occasional open disco hat feel going on. I tuned the snare up pretty tight on this one too. There's a very subtle overtone that I am digging. Man, that Cherry Hill snare is just so versatile and sounds so good in so many different applications.
I hope you enjoy this cover and please tune in tomorrow for Day 4!
