"The Boys of Summer" by The Ataris - Drum Cover by KMKanDrum

I remember when The Ataris first released their cover of "The Boys of Summer" I had pretty mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I was a punk kid who loved when punk bands covered a pop song and made it more punk-sounding. But on the other hand, I was not at all into all these punk bands that were making it into the mainstream. I loved covers like "Bad Moon Rising" by Lag Wagon, or "I Want You To Want Me" by Propagandhi, and I thought those types of covers were way better than a lot of the covers that were on the radio.

But as I got older, the injustice of it mattered less to me, and I realized that some of the covers that got mainstream airplay weren't bad at all. Such is the case with this one. It's a decent cover. Lead singer, Chris Roe does a great job with the vocals and the guitars sound nice and thick. The only thing I actually didn't care for too much was the drums.

As you watch this one, if you're familiar with the original cover, you'll notice I totally changed up the bass drum pattern and most of the fills. The only thing I tried to keep the same was the cool tom part during the breakdown/bridge.

Again, this is ego. As a punk drummer, I like what I like, and I hear what I hear. And what I heard in the original is totally not what I would've recorded in the studio if I were the drummer. So I took this opportunity to lay down what I would have if I were the studio drummer for this track.I hope you enjoy it!
